Actress Elisabeth Shue was born to well off parents in October 1963 in Wilmington , Virginia . When Elisabeth arrived, the family already had one son and Shue’s parents subsequently gave birth to another son after Elisabeth. After the birth of her brother, the family moved to New Jersey . With Elisabeth being surrounded mostly by boys, she became a typical tomboy. Shue’s mother got Elisabeth interested in feminine pursuits when she introduced Shue to gymnastics. Due to the divorce between her mother, a bank executive and her father, a real estate developer when she was in grade 4, Elisabeth suffered greatly. With her parents working long hours, it gave plenty of time for Shue and her brothers to take up smoking and other not so legal pursuits. Shue’s parents halted this activity by sending Elisabeth to Wellesley College , following high school.
By the time that Elisabeth Shue had enrolled in Harvard which was a family tradition in order to study Political Science, Shue had already appeared in many commercials for companies like DeBeers Diamonds and Burger King, so it seemed the natural progression to get into film. Elisabeth’s very first commercial was for a Florida Theme Park and included several cart wheels and somersaults which showed off Shue’s gymnastic training. During the time that Elisabeth appeared in number of commercials, Shue was also in a short-lived television show called “Call To Glory” in 1984.and co-stared in the movie series “The Karate Kid” with Ralph Macchio.
A semester short of Elisabeth Shue’s Harvard graduation, she began to focus solely on acting. Elisabeth stared alongside Tom Cruise in “Cocktail” and preformed in a number of other roles in a variety of other movies. During this time, her brother Andrew Shue became a star in his own right as the well known star of the soap opera “ Melrose Place ” along with starring roles in a variety of movies.
Elisabeth Shue left Harvard without graduating. Elisabeth continued on acting in movies and became a well known name to the public through the starring role she had in the movie “Leaving Las Vegas” which co stared Nicholas Cage. This movie portrayed Shue as a prostitute dealing with an alcoholic boyfriend. This movie was a shining moment for both of them and propelled them both onto Hollywood ’s “A List”.
Despite Elisabeth Shue’s busy acting career, Elisabeth has found the time to marry David Guggenheim in 1997 and gave birth to a son by the name Miles William. Not only did Shue accomplish starting a family, but Elisabeth managed to finish her Political Science degree at Harvard.
Elisabeth Shue has since given birth to two more daughters and continues to work in the film industry. Shue currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, three children and dog, Sonny. Word on the street is that the public we will get another glimpse of Elisabeth Shue shortly in an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s written work “The House of Mirth”.
